Animal Dung Paper

Founded in 1999 by husband and wife team Nattapong and Chathima Pingpayom, G-Create specializes in eco-friendly natural paper products. Nattapong was producing etched-glass decorative pieces, but after the recession in 1997, he sought out new business ideas. Chiangmai, an established hub for paper products, is bountiful in natural resources. Nattapong found his inspiration in a simple banana tree and decided to make a series of greeting cards showcasing many different parts of the banana tree in one product. This series won him first and second prize in a local design competition and he realized he had found his calling. In continuing efforts to have as little impact on the environment as possible in their production methods, Nattapong has been producing paper from the dung of large herbivorous animals. The concept came from the popular elephant dung paper, which he branched out to include rhino, hippo, water buffalo, zebra, camel and giraffe. Sourcing his dung from local animal attractions, he combines the fibrous dung with mulberry bark, before going through the steps of paper production. This process reduces the use of mulberry by 50 % and adds incredible textures to the various papers. G-Create has won numerous awards such as the Green Innovation Design Award, for employing production methods that have no impact on the environment and even improving the environment by reducing methane emissions from the dung!

G-Create’s series of animal dung papers is quite remarkable. In an effort to be as eco-friendly as possible, Nattapong found a way to reduce the amount of mulberry bark used in handmade paper production by incorporating the dung of various large herbivores such as hippos, giraffes and rhinos. While all of them have a diet based on greens and hay, they process it differently in their digestive system, so the textures from the resulting dung is quite varied. Hippo paper, which replaces approximately 50% of mulberry usage with hippo dung, has a very fine and smooth texture, whereas the giraffe has a lot more texture. A combination of these papers make up the safari collection; a box set including a handbound book with zebra inspired cover with matching tabletop clock and an incense burner. Animal dung papers have additional environmental benefits including recycling waste animal dung from zoos and animal parks thus reducing methane in the atmosphere.
